Academic Games
The Academic Games Team belongs to a league in which students from
local high schools compete in games involving thinking and strategy.
For six weeks each semester, the teams in the league play a game
based on math concepts: ON-SETS in the 1st semester, and EQUATIONS
in the 2nd semester. Two other games, PROPAGANDA and MR. PRESIDENT,
are played for two weeks each by those interested in qualifying for
the national tournament.
Students compete for both team and
individual honors as members of four-man teams. These teams are
grouped according to grade level: Senior Division (11th–12th
grades), Junior Division (9th–10th grades), and Middle Division
(7th–8th grades). The team meets twice a week during the year for
practice and competition.
In addition to winning league awards in
each game, students who participate in all four games may earn a
letter and jacket. Those who are members of championship teams also
receive special awards. The highlight of each year comes at the end
of April when students, who meet league qualifying rules, attend the
national tournament for one week with approximately 500 other
students from the eastern half of the United States.
