Rallies
Literary Rallies are one of the three principal forms of
academic interscholastic competition, the others being the Academic
Games League and the New Orleans Mathematics League. District Rally
is held on the campus of UNO in March or April of the school year
and State Rally is two to three weeks later at LSU.
Participation in District Rally is not open to all students, but
only to those who are selected by their teachers in each of the
subject areas Archbishop Rummel traditionally enters. At present,
Archbishop Rummel may enter at least two students in most subjects.
At District Rally, Archbishop Rummel’s students compete against each
other and against students from practically every other school in
the four parish metropolitan New Orleans area for the right to
qualify to enter State Rally. The number of qualifiers in a
particular subject area depends on the number of schools entered in
that subject. Besides qualification to enter State Rally, awards at
District Rally consist of medals for third, second, first, and
overall place winners.
At State Rally, Archbishop Rummel’s qualifiers from District Rally,
which may number at most one in each subject area, are in
competition with State Rally qualifiers from other District Rallies
throughout Louisiana. Here they are competing not only for medals
given to first through fifth place winners, but for the prize given
only to one student in each subject area, the overall winner. If
funded by the state of Louisiana, he receives a tuition cash
scholarship which may be used at any college or university in the
state, public or private. If he places first in his division, and if
funded by the state, he will get an activity scholarship. It is for
this reason that students selected to participate in the rallies
should motivate themselves to complete the course of studies for the
year in their particular subject area before the dates of District
and State Rallies, the ultimate goal being to win the scholarships.
This information concerning State Rally does not apply to the
subject areas of Spanish 4, French 4, and Latin 1 and 2, since there
is no State Rally competition in these subjects at present.
