The
English program at Archbishop Rummel aims to bring students
to their full potential as writers by the end of their senior
year. The department realizes the fundamental need of English
in college and ensures students are fully prepared to meet
the demands of the university and the business world. The
English Department not only aids students with grammar,
but also tries to improve style and content. The structuring
of term papers, compare / contrast papers, and technical
writing are all part of the program during all years at
Archbishop Rummel.
The English Department also
focuses on the culture of the language. By exploring the
greatest British and American authors, students have a deeper
view of the times in which a literary work was written. Some
famous writers and examples of their works studied are
William Shakespeare (Hamlet),
Mark Twain (Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn), John
Milton (Paradise
Lost), Edgar Allen Poe (The
Raven), Sir Thomas Malory (Morte
Darthur), and Herman Melville
(Moby
Dick).
Four credits
of English are required for a student to earn an Archbishop
Rummel diploma, while students in the Advanced Honors track
earn five English credits. Students may be tracked into the
Honors English program at the time of their admission into
Archbishop Rummel or at a later time, if their performance n
the academic classes merits such a move. Students who are
tracked into honors classes adhere to a demanding curriculum
of advanced reading and composition and are held accountable
to a greater level of proficiency in a standard-based
curriculum than those students in academic and basic tracks.
Furthermore, honors students may be eligible for Advanced
Placement (AP) testing their junior and seniors years.
