Honor Code

Reading Counts Honor Code

To help maintain the atmosphere of mutual trust and confidence among students and teachers and to ensure that each student demonstrates that he has read his chosen book, the following honor code will be established.

No student will unfairly advance his own performance in the Reading Counts program, nor will he in any way intentionally limit or advance the performance of his fellow students using Reading Counts.

The student signing this pledge confirms his belief in this code and therefore is expected to report suspected violations of the Honor Code.

The scope of actions that fall under this code is very broad.  The following are
examples of what will be considered violations of the code:

            1.  Giving or receiving questions or answers for any Reading Counts quiz, or in
any way cheating on a Reading Counts quiz.

             2.  Using Cliff Notes, Spark Notes, classic comic books, movies, videos,
downloaded chapter-by-chapter synopses, or  any shortened or abridged
versions of the books on the Reading Counts lists  to try to pass the quizzes.

            3.  Using any means besides reading the full, unabridged version of the book
to pass a Reading Counts quiz. This includes taking a quiz on a book that
has not be read in full.
(Signing your name in the Sign-Up book
indicates that you have read the book and are prepared for the quiz.)

             4.  Taking a test on a previously read book without teacher’s and librarian’s
                  permission.

An academic honor code system secures for the students certain freedoms, conveniences, and privileges that would not otherwise be possible.  It engenders an atmosphere for learning without constant supervision that would otherwise be necessary.  The system requires all students to accept the responsibility of maintaining the standards of the community.  Thus each student must accept the responsibility of the Honor System.  Any student suspecting a violation is expected to report it to the librarian or teacher involved.

A willful violation of the Honor Code results in a zero for the Reading Counts quiz and the issuance of a conduct detention for cheating.

“I hereby state that I understand the Honor Code with regard to the use of the Reading Counts program.  I understand that cheating is wrong and will result in a RC grade of zero and a conduct detention.”
