The
Academics Games Teams belong to a league in which
students from local high schools compete in games
involving thinking and strategy. For six weeks each
semester, the teams in the league play a game based on
math concepts: ON-SETS in the 1st semester and EQUATIONS
in the 2nd semester. The two other games, PROPAGANDA
and MR. PRESIDENT, are played for two weeks each by
those interested in qualifying for the national
tournament.
Students compete for both team and individual honors
in three teams with five students in each. These teams
are grouped according to grade level: Senior Division
(11th & 12th Grades), Junior Division (9th & 10th
Grades), and Middle Division (8th & 7th Grades). The
team meets twice a week during the year for practice and
competition. Team member may also participate in
various optional "fun" activities if they so desire.
In addition to winning league awards in each game,
students who participate in all four games may earn a
letter and a jacket. Those who are members of
championship teams also receive special awards. The
highlight of each year comes at the end of April when
students who meet league qualifying rules attend the
national tournament for one week with approximately 500
other students from the eastern half of the United
States.
The
Academic Games Team recently competed in Propaganda, a
game involving techniques of persuasion. There were two
days of competition, held after school at Jesuit High
School on successive Tuesdays. Next, the Academic Games
Team will compete in Equations, a math game.
Competition will be held on Tuesdays after school at
Jesuit over a six week period.
