Parent to Parent
The Parent to Parent Community Action System was created to establish dialogue between Parents and School Leaders. At the same time, there is communication between parents. It is essential that parents become aware of the ever-changing world and its effects on our youth.

With the help of parent facilitators, Archbishop Rummel High School offers sessions on various topics that our students encounter.

Session #1: The Toxic Culture
This session sets the tone for the program by exploring the culture to which our kids are exposed.  It looks at messages such as violence as entertainment, adolescent sex as normal, and drugs and alcohol as part of growing up.  It strongly believes that parents can no longer parent in isolation.

Session # 2: Put Yourself In The Way
Encourages parents to get involved in their child’s life and to know their friends, interests, habits, and feelings.  Parenting today must be proactive.  The session provides an early warning system for parents, discusses how to recognize attitudes, and introduces the five basics of prevention.

Session #3: Awareness Is Your Best Friend
Teaches that you should listen to your intuition.  If you note changes in your child’s behavior, such as a sudden drop in academic interest or a new set of troublesome friends, do not ignore the situation.  This session outlines significant, observable lifestyle indicators that signal positive or negative changes.

Session #4: Remember The Difference
Adolescence is a middle ground where the difference between children and adults is not so clear and this session focuses on three character traits that must be developed in the early teen years. It trains parents to use the child’s drive for independence as the vehicle for developing these traits, discusses the importance of trust, and explores the issue of punishment vs. consequences.

Session #5: Expect And Inspect
Contends that it is legitimate to have high expectations for your kids.  Insisting that they be drug and alcohol free, responsible, and respectful is your right.  It is okay to supervise; we show love through inspection.  Session trains parents how to communicate a family belief system and discusses eleven enabling behaviors.

Session #6: Never Cry Alone
Out of misguided affection, we sometimes spare our children the pain of life.  Protecting them is one thing, but insulating them from life’s everyday stresses can be dangerous.  The session shows that real families have real concerns, such as health, finances, and each other’s well being. Genuinely sharing the bad times as well as the good times will help kids deal with feelings rather than mask them through the use of alcohol or drugs.  The session also talks about why lectures do not work.

Session #7: Traps To Avoid
Explores seven traps which parents must help their children avoid: wealth without work; entertainment without conscience; education without character; love without limits; freedom without accountability; adulthood without childhood; and life without a vision.  Also promotes the value of hard work and effort.

Session #8: Building A Family Vision
Helps parents organize a game plan for raising their child.  Parents can then work with their children to help them reach their goals and dreams.
