Rare Newsreel Footage of Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel

On September 19, 2008, Archbishop Rummel High School was the recipient of two very special and sacred articles -- the chalice and paten of Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel, the ninth archbishop of New Orleans and our school’s namesake. Archbishop Rummel had given these to his close friend, Msgr. Joseph Chotin, who bequeathed them to the school upon his death. The presentation was made by Dr. and Mrs. Warren Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was Msgr. Chotin’s sister.  At the same time Dr. and Mrs. Johnson also presented the school with a copy of vintage film footage of Archbishop Rummel himself. The first part of this 5 ½ minute video clip depicts the archbishop’s first arrival in the city in 1935. Then there is a scene of the archbishop being honored in 1953 on the 25th anniversary of his being named a bishop. Following this is additional footage of the celebrations surrounding his original arrival. Archbishop Rummel High School is very blessed to have this rare historical document and is happy to share it with you. This footage will become a permanent fixture of our Living Tradition section under the About Us menu.
