Brothers Visit Science Class After Reception

Following Thursday’s end-of-year mass in the gym and reception in the faculty dining hall, Brother John Fairfax (seated) and Brother Gale Condit, next year’s school president, stopped in the eighth grade science class of Ms. Charlene Wetzel. Brother John asked the students what they were learning on Thursday in class and just chatted briefly with the students. After their quick visit, they drove back home to Covington, LA.

Mass Includes Rituals, Faculty Honorees

The final school mass of the 2011-12 school year was scheduled for midday on Thursday and numerous events took place before, during, and after the liturgy. After the Senior Class of 2013 marched into the gym and were commissioned by President-Principal Michael Scalco, former principal Brother John Fairfax, FSC, addressed the student body about the early days of the school and the history and traditions of the Christian Brothers. Fr. Pat Wattigny then began mass and included the seasonal tradition of the May crowning after the communion song. Before the final blessing, Mr. Scalco called on next year’s school president, Brother Gale Condit, FSC, to read the blurbs about this year’s honorees. They included 20 year honoree Mr. Eddie Jaquillard and 10 year honorees Mr. Louis Burg, Mr. Tim Burns, Mr. Michael Scalco, and Mr. Carlos Arangueren. After the following blessing, the students participataed in a boisterous, hand-clapping rendition of “Lean on Me” before they sang the traditional Alma Mater and Fight Song. Following mass, the honorees and their families were feted with a light lunch in the faculty dining room.

Spring Athletes Honored at Awards Event

At the recent Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony, numerous awards were distributed to athletes in the gym, but one of the most prestigious was the Rufus Award for exceptional athletic performance. The recipients were two this year and they were football and track star Cyril Grayson and wrestler star Scott Gibbons. Other top awards distributed include the Father Roca Award for Christian ideals to Scott Hale and the Carl Avrard Award for the athlete with the highest GPA to Tucker Roussel. During the ceremony, teams in bowling, tennis, golf, baseball, and track were recognized by their coaches. Athletic AD Phil Greco served as master of ceremonies and President-Principal Michael Scalco gave closing comments to the athletes and their parents.

Local Cafe Thanks Team for Great Season

Driving south down Causeway Boulevard, curious motorists might notice the big sign on the right side of the road. Standing tall in front of the Tic Tock 24hour cafe is a congratulations message of the Raider ball team. The squad played for the state championship this past Sunday, but lost to the Barbe Bucs, 3-2. All over the Raider Nation the team has been receiving congratulations messages and the Tick Tock Cafe is just one of many individuals and businesses giving thanks for the Raiders.

Science Class Builds Balanced Lever Systems

Eighth and ninth graders in Ms. Charlene Wetzel’s physical science classes put their hands to work after class lectures and built balanced lever systems. With a common name of “mobiles,” the lever systems were hanged from the classroom ceiling in the physical science class. Ms. Wetzel said the mobile projects were diversified, colorful, and well done.

English Turn Challenges Alumni Golfers

Golf Classic video

Sponsored by the Alumni Office, the annual Raider Golf Classic was played this past Monday at the English Turn Country Club. With more than 200 Archbishop Rummel alumni, parents, and friends of the school participating, the golfers could play in morning or afternoon flights. Those who played in the morning were served breakfast by City Diner and lunch by Drago’s Restaurant, while afternoon golfers were served lunch and dinner by Drago’s Restaurant. Also, throughout the course, the classic golfers could find food and drink at several stops along the English Turn course. At the conclusion of the golf classic, the alums were grateful to the many volunteers who made the classic a huge success.
