Scholastic Reading Counts is a reading motivational program that encourages students to read by allowing free choice reading from a wide-variety of books. Upon finishing their selected books, students take a 10 – 20 question computerized quiz. A score of 70% or high indicates that the book has been read. Students are awarded quiz grades or extra-credit points for successfully reading free-choice books. The Library Department additionally rewards students who read above the minimum reading requirements.
Currently, there are approximately 2000 Reading Counts titles from which students can choose. These titles cover a wide-range of topics that appeal to young men in grades 8 – 12 with various reading ability. The Lexile of each book is listed enabling students to select titles within their Lexile range. Titles are chosen from: the classics, award-winning popular fiction and non-fiction, and lists, such as, Best Books for Adolescences and Young Adults and Books for the College Bound.
