Archbishop Rummel High School
O

Poets in our midst!

Much to his surprise, Archbishop High School junior Nick McClendon recently won an on-line poetry contest for writing a haiku, a form of Japanese poetry first used in the 17th century.  For winning the daily contest, Nick will receive – besides the praise and acclaim of his classmates - a personalized mouse-pad that has his winning poem and name emblazoned on it.  By going to http://poetry.com/haiku/todaywinner.asp, you can see Nick’s winning haiku.  Because it is a daily contest, you may need to check the Previous Winners link.

As part of a creative writing assignment last week, budding poets in Mr. Stout’s English IV classes were originally required to enter the contest, but some students quickly became addicted and still continue to submit their poetry, even though the assignment ended some time ago.  Believe it or not, these Rummel students are matching their writing skills with hundreds of people from all over the world who participate daily.  As a matter of fact, it is not unusual to see entries from 20-plus states and several countries, like India, Romania, England, and Australia.
