Frequently Asked Questions
Go to EDIT and FIND to search for topics not currently visible on the screen.

1.  I don't use all those icons on my desktop; can I get rid of them?

Yes.  You can still get to the program later by going to Start and Programs.  Deleting desktop icons does not remove the actual program from the computer.

2.  When I start my computer, I see my account and a Student user.  Do I need the Student user?

No.  You may delete the Student user by going to Start - Control Panel - User Accounts.  Click on Change an Account and Click on the Student Account.  You should then see a choice for Delete the account.  If you decide later that you want to create a limited account in order to use the laptop with a student, you can create such an account easily.

3.  Why can't I open PDF files? or Why does Photoshop start when I try to open PDF files?

The software for Adobe Reader is on the laptop.  However, it must be activated one time before it will automatically recognize PDF documents.  To activate, go to Start and Run and Programs.  Click on the Adobe Reader icon to start the setup.  After the setup is complete, simply close the program.  It will open automatically the next time you try to open a PDF document.

4.  I can't get a connection.  My wireless light doesn't even come on.

To the front of the Tablet, just below and slightly to the left of the latch which opens the computer, is a tiny sliding bar which turns the wireless radio on and off.  If you don't see the green square, it is set to off. Slide the bar all the way to the right to turn the radio ON.  When it is all the way to the left, the radio is OFF.

5.  How do I get the OneNote icon to appear at the bottom of the screen so I can use Create Screen Clipping?

Start OneNote (Start-Programs-Microsoft Office-OneNote).  Select Tools-Options from the menu bar.  Select Other and put a check mark next to Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar.

6.  How do I get a page with no lines to be my default in OneNote?

Start OneNote (Start-Programs-Microsoft Office-OneNote).  Select Tools-Options from the menu bar.  Select Display and take the check mark out of Create all new pages with rule lines.

7.  Can I create my own blank landscaped page in OneNote so that it comes up every time I create a new page?

Yes.  Follow the directions in item 6 above, then open a new page.  It should be blank with no lines.  Then go File and Page Setup.  In the right panel, pull down the arrow next to Size: Auto and make it Letter.  Set your margins to small numbers like .25.  At the bottom or the right panel and select Save current page as stationery.  Give the stationery a name such as Default or Landscape Letter and check Set as default stationery for new pages in the current section.  Then Select FORMAT from the menu bar and select Stationery.  At the bottom of the right panel, you can Choose the Default Stationery you just created.

8.  Is there a way to make the battery automatically display how much time it still has without moving the mouse over the battery icon?

Yes.  Left click one time on the colored battery at the bottom center of the screen.  A list of times comes up; select Show.  One of the choices will be to show TIME instead of PERCENT.  However, remember that this is not an actual clock.  If it says you have 4 hours, that is just an estimate based on what you have been doing for the last 15 minutes.  If you start doing highly memory intensive activities such as photo editing, the estimated time will drop.  Nevertheless, the remaining time is a much better clue to battery life than the percent.  If the battery says 27%, you may fear you are going to run out soon. In actuality you have hours of time left.

9.  Can I use Outlook to check my mail on campus AND at home?

Yes, but you need to set up two mail accounts.  And you need to configure the Send/Receive into two groups which both send manually.  It's a good idea to have your Home account set to leave messages on the server.

10.  OneNote refuses to let me insert Word documents?

You need to have the Microsoft Document Imaging printer enabled.  Go to START and Printers to see if it is in the list.  See the item highlighted below.

If it is not listed, you can install it by going to START - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.  Find Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007.  Select Change.  DO NOT SELECT REMOVE.  Select Add or Remove features.  Once again, DO NOT SELECT REMOVE.

Scroll down to Office Tools and click on the + to open the choices.  Click on the upside down triangle to the right of Microsoft Document Imaging and select Run from my computer.  Click on CONTINUE to perform the installation.  When you are finished, you should be able to open OneNote and Insert a Document.

11.  Click on Samples to see some organizational structures for OneNote.  (You need AdobeReader to see the samples.  If you have not activated it on the Tablet, see #3 above for instructions.)
