USB or FLASH DRIVES
  • Floppy Drives are rapidly becoming obsolete.  The preferred storage media at the moment is the FLASH or USB drive.  It is highly portable, often marketed as an attachment to a person's keyring.

  • Some flash drives require the computer to install a program to the computer on which they will be used.  This is not possible on many public work stations, such as those used at school or in a public library.  You should avoid purchasing such drives.  The ones we have encountered so far are GeekSquad U3 drives sold by Best Buy. Sandisk also makes similar flash drives.  Removal instructions which allow use of these drives are provided online.  Tell the salesman that your flash drive cannot have pre-installed security software which loads on start up.

  • If you are buying a USB simply as a replacement for a floppy, the smallest available size is fine.  Currently the 128 mb size is satisfactory, even for PowerPoint files.

  • Personal photos and MP3 files will fill a flash drive.  It is never a good idea to store non-school files on a usb drive whose primary purpose is school-related materials.

  • When you remove a flash drive from a computer, you must pull it straight out.  If you pull up on the drive, you can snap off the end of the device which means it is useless.

FILES
  • Corrupt or inaccessible files can be a problem, especially if the file involves schoolwork and the need to meet a deadline.  To minimize the risk:
    - use to a USB drive rather than to a floppy disk
    - save work in two locations (e.g. on a network or home computer as well as on a portable device such as a floppy disk or flash drive)
    - if a floppy disk is the only storage option, always use one purchased in the last 6 months, kept in a carrying case free of dirt and moisture
    - use a storage device for school work only, not personal photos or music

  • AVOID using Hotmail as a way to transfer files between school and home.  It will not allow you to download at school.  Yahoo mail will allow you to preview, print and open the document in Word for saving to another location.

Personal Websites
Student creation of personal websites on locations such as myspace.com should be discouraged.  Sharing of personal information on these sites is dangerous.

Laptop usage
  • Wireless access now exists in the Senior High building except for the Raider Room and in the Junior High building except for the separate buildings.

  • Students must read the requirements for use, fill out the permissions slip and obtain the appropriate signatures.

  • The permission slip should be brought to the office of Cheryl Mire, the Network Administrator, located next to Mr. Scalco's office, in order to gain access to Internet Services on campus.
