Read the Gospel. Live the Gospel.

Every Raider serves, in every grade, for four and a half years. This is what is required, what counts, and how it gets reported.

Why we serve.

It is the mission of Archbishop Rummel High School to prepare students for lives of faith, community, and service in the Catholic and Lasallian tradition, with priority for and with persons living in poverty and those who are marginalized.

Each Raider should both read the Gospel and live the Gospel. When service flows from a desire to bring Christ to every person, all made in the image and likeness of God, it is not done for our own sake or to check a box. Serving others allows a student to be Christ for others. To be the poor widow who offered her whole livelihood in Mark 12. To be the Good Samaritan who showed unthinkable mercy in Luke 10. To be one of the four men lowering a paralytic through a roof to reach Jesus in Mark 2.

The heart of the program is a commitment to develop and support students’ conscientious citizenship as young men who strive for excellence in character, faith, community, and service. Excellence in character begins with respect for every human person. During theology classes, students take part in guided reflection and journaling through the lens of the virtues and principles of Catholic social teaching and the Lasallian tradition.

What each grade owes.

One hundred thirty hours across the five years, and every grade carries a focus of its own. A student may serve beyond his own focus at any time.

8th20 hours

Food insecurity and hunger

Half of the hours support programs addressing hunger. Second Harvest is the primary organization and offers daily, afternoon, evening, and Saturday opportunities.

9th20 hours

The environment and animals

At least one activity. City Park is a good place for litter abatement, planting, and mulching. Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and the Louisiana Bucket Brigade also qualify, as does the JPSPCA or another nonprofit animal rescue.

10th25 hours

People living with disabilities

At least one activity. Special Olympics, St. Michael’s, ARC of Greater New Orleans, and Magnolia Community Services are examples.

11th40 hours

Unhoused and marginalized persons

At least one activity of direct service. Grace at the Greenlight and Ozanam Inn, Lantern Light and the Rebuild Center at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the New Orleans Mission are among the outreaches that qualify.

12th25 hours

Rebuilding the region

At least one activity with groups such as Youth Rebuilding New Orleans or Rebuilding Together New Orleans, with an emphasis on working income families, veterans, persons living with disabilities, and senior citizens.

All students take part in the designated class service days, which are communicated in advance during the school year.

The deadline is April 26, 2027 at 7:30am. Hours not reported by then are not counted, and a student who has not completed his hours fails theology for the second semester.

What counts, and what does not.

Service hours are not simply unpaid work. They help the community through free service that directly benefits people who are marginalized, and the work is done through recognized nonprofit institutions.

Approved

  • Service for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
  • Service for or with youth groups, teams, clubs, and organizations
  • Opportunities presented or approved by a theology teacher or another member of the Rummel faculty and staff
  • Service for the Church as a lector, altar server, musician, or with Vacation Bible School and children’s liturgy
  • Service with or through religious groups of other traditions, including Baptist, nondenominational, Jewish, and Muslim

Not accepted

  • Any work done for pay
  • Unpaid work at a business run for profit, including internships and a family business
  • Work for family, relatives, friends, or neighbors, unless approved by a theology teacher or Brother B
  • Family obligations such as mowing the lawn or babysitting
  • Helping elderly grandparents, aunts, and uncles, unless it is connected to an approved nonprofit
  • Hours completed by a parent or guardian on a student’s behalf
  • Fundraising where the money benefits the student rather than the organization
  • Selling candy, raffle tickets, or discount cards

The primary criterion for approval is that the hours are performed for a nonprofit organization whose mission is consistent with, or not in opposition to, the mission, beliefs, and teachings of the Catholic Church. Hours are also declined when the organization operates for profit, such as a mall, retail outlet, law office, doctor’s office, or dance school, or when the service exploits the person performing it.

Reporting hours.

Every hour is entered through MobileServe, within one week of the service. The best practice is to file the report as soon as the shift ends, while still on site.

  1. 1

Download MobileServe and create an account

Available for Android and iPhone, and on a computer through the MobileServe website.

  2. 2

    Read the training slides

Brother B keeps a set of slides that answers most questions before they come up.

  3. 3

    Log the hours before leaving

At the end of the shift, while still on site, open MobileServe and log the hours. Complete as many forms of verification as possible, including supervisor information, a signature, and photo documentation.

  4. 4

    If MobileServe is not available

This should rarely happen. Use the organization’s official letterhead with the supervising adult’s name, email, and signature, along with the date, time, and a description of the service.

Reports are read. Poorly written and thoughtless responses do not count toward a student’s total. Falsifying hours or any part of a service report violates the school’s academic and integrity policy and carries the consequences set out in the student handbook.

Scheduled events, first semester.

Directly sponsored or supported by the Office for Lasallian Mission and Service. Brother B or another member of the faculty and staff attends every one. Email Brother B by the deadline to take part, and unless a grade level is named, every student is welcome.
